Summary

Speedfest VI featured two racing classes: Alpha (Advanced) Class which is open to collegiate teams, and India (Invitational) class, which is open to high schools and academic teams with similar levels of experience.  A total of 18 teams competed in Speedfest VI, including well over 200 students and teachers.   The official gate count was over 850 people. Winds for the day were were relatively light, and the weather was excellent.

Alpha class featured jet-powered aircraft in Speedfest for the first time.  Teams were challenged with responding to a statement of work for a jet powered trainer that could then be used as a sport jet.  Teams were judged in 10 different objective categories where scores were dependent on aircraft performance, and for the first time, cost.  Also, teams were judged in 5 different subjective categories including fit and finish, and handling qualities.  Static displays were also required so teams could present their aircraft to industry judges as well as spectators.  Finally, teams performed a flight demonstration to narration and music and spectators voted on "Best of Show."  After a challenging and exciting competition, OSU Orange won the overall event, with OSU Black taking the honor for Best of Show.

Final Standings for Alpha Class:
  1. Oklahoma State University Orange "Scorpion"
  2. Oklahoma State University Black "Obsidian"
  3. St. Louis University "Echo"
India Class teams were challenged with the fabrication of a pylon competition aicraft based on the "Uproar" airplane kit with a .46 cubic inch, 2-stroke engine.  Speedfest VI allowed the highest level of aircraft design modifications yet.  Several teams made significant modifications to their aircraft design, and as a result, several new performance records were set.  The planes flew head-to-head in heats of up to 4 planes at a time.  Weather and flow of the event were excellent and teams had the opportunity to fly 9 rounds.  15 teams entered Speedfest in the India class, and all scored in multiple rounds which was a record in itself.  Four of the teams (the NASA and Boeing teams) were made up of in-service  teachers.  India was very competitive and the top three aircraft were all highly modified designs and all set or exceeded the previous Speedfest flag records.  The score for Overall Score Champion was also a record performance by the OCS team.
