Summary
Speedfest V featured two racing classes: Alpha (Advanced) Class which
is
open to collegiate teams, and India
(Invitational) class, which is open to high school teams. A
total
of 15 teams competed in Speedfest V, including well over 200 students
and teachers.
The
official gate count was over 600 people. Winds for the day were were relatively light, and the weather was excellent.
Alpha class teams developed internal combustion-powered airplanes that
were
optimized for air and ground speed mission: The air mission
consisted of a race to 15 flags, at which point the team had to deploy
an autonomous ground vehicle. The ground vehicle had to have a
camera payload, and take a picture of a hidden sign as well as complete
a 6 flag ground course as quickly as possible. Fastest overall
time (lowest score) was the winner. After a competitive and
exciting race, the Alpha Class scores were as follows:

India
Class teams were challenged with the fabrication of an "Uproar"
airplane kit with a .46 cubic inch, 2-stroke engine. The
planes
flew head-to-head in heats of up to 4 planes at a time. 12
teams
entered Speedfest in the India class, and 10 scored.
Competition
was close, with the top 3 scores being a 15, resulting in a
tie-breaker.
A new team; Tishomingo High school took the top spot with 15
flags, as well as scoring Overall Score Champion with a score of
95 flags. Close behind, were Meridian Tech, and Great
Plains Tech.

India teams could compete for additional awards.
Judges
consisted of aerospace engineering students from the OSU student
chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Best Airplane Build:
Tishomingo High School. Quality of construction was judged
by
technical inspection judges.
Best Airplane Graphics:
Great Plains Frigates. The Frigates team went with a Red Bull Air Racer theme.
Best Helmet:
Tishomingo High School. Tishomingo helmets were adorned with a Native American feathers theme.
Team Spirit:
Gordan Cooper Tech Center. The judges felt that
the Jaguars team best demonstrated team spirit and sportsmanship with thier
positive attitude, assistance to other teams, and excellent airplane.

Speedfest V featured a required competition category for 2 minute
promotional videos. People from around the world voted
for their favorite. Awards were based on the highest number of votes. Click on a link to
